Dill Seed Oil

Dill seed oil is extracted from all natural dill seeds. Dill is a short-lived perennial plant which belongs to the Apiaceae plant family. This aromatic annual herb is indigenous to Eastern Europe. It is found growing in the wild in many parts of the world including the coastal Mediterranean regions, Central Asia, Southern parts of Russia and South Asia. Dill is also commercially cultivated in many countries for its medicinal and culinary benefits. The important cultivation zones include North America, England and Germany. The word ‘Dill’ is extracted from an old Norse word ‘dilla’, which means ‘to lull or to calm down’. This herb is given this name mainly because of its significant use in natural remedies which relieved children suffering from colicky stomachs.

Dill seeds are still used in the making of gripe water for treating digestive disorders. Dill plant grows up to a maximum height of 75 cm. The leaves of this plant are soft, delicate, alternate and feathery in nature. These finely divided leaves measure about 10 to 20 cm long and are slightly broader than fennel leaves. These leaves are divided proportionately and are 1 to 2 mm broad. Dill leaves are slightly broader than fennel leaves. This plant has an erect stem which is hollow inside. The Dill flowers are white to yellow in color and measure about 2 to 9 cm in diameter. These flowers, when in bloom, appear in small umbels on the hollow stem. Dill seeds are 4 to 5 mm long and 1 mm thick. These seeds are slightly curved and have a ridged longitudinal surface. They look like large cumin seeds. Dill Seed Oil is extracted from dill seeds through steam distillation method. The oil is generally taken from the crushed, dried and mature fruit of Anethum Graveolens. Dill seeds have a natural peppery odor. These seeds are spicy, fresh, warm and herbaceous in nature.

Dill plant can be grown successfully in certain favorable conditions. It requires warm or hot climate with full sunlight. This plant can also be grown in partial shade. Dill plant grows well in well-drained and rich fertile soil. Dill seeds are viable for about 3 to 10 years. Cultivation is carried out by using fully ripe seeds. The dill essential oil contains sulfur, phosphorous, D-carvone, paraffin hydrocarbon, sodium, carvone, limonene, phellandrene, eugenol, pinen and d-limoneme. Dill seed oil has stimulant, antispasmodic, aromatic, stomachic, soporific, calmative, galactagogue, carminative and diuretic properties.

Uses: Dill seeds essential oil are used in the treatment of flatulence, colic in children, halitosis, insomnia, indigestion, hiccups, stomach upset and other digestive discomforts.
