Tarragon Oil

Tarragon oil is extracted from the leaves and flowering tops of the Dragon’s Wort plant. This herb is related to wormwood. Tarragon is a perennial plant which belongs to the Asteraceae plant family. This herb is indigenous to a wide area spread from the Northern Hemisphere to Eastern Europe across Central and East Asia to India, western North America, and south to northern Mexico.  There are two types of Tarragon, they are the French Tarragon and the Russian Tarragon. French Tarragon is the best variety suitable for kitchen, while the Russian Tarragon has a comparatively meek flavor than its French counterpart. This plant grows up to an average height of 120 to 150cm. It has slender stems and lancelike leaves. The Tarragon leaves are silvery-green in color covered with fine silky hairs. The flowers are circular and pale yellow in color. It measures about 2 to 4mm diameter. Roots of the Tarragon plant are fibrous and long. The name of this plant is derived from the Arabic word ‘ Tharkhoum’ and the Latin word ‘Dracunculus’ meaning ‘little dragon’. This is because the roots of this plant coils like a dragon.

Tarragon oil is extracted from the leaves and flowering tops through steam distillation method. This oil has a spicy, herbaceous, tender and a slight anise aroma. Tarragon oil blends well with rosewood oil, carrot seed oil, lime oil and lavender oil.


Latin name: Atremisia Dracunculus.

Alternative names: French Tarragon, Dragon’s Mugwort, Estragon, True Tarragon, German Tarragon, Russian tarragon, Little dragon.

Tarragon plant grows well in tropical zones with full sunlight and can tolerate partial shade as well. It prefers dry growing conditions without excessive watering. This plant stops growing in winter and prefer light soils supported by a proper drainage system. The Tarragon essential oil contains tannins, cineol, coumarins, flavonoids, ocimene, estragole, volatile oils and ocimene. The therapeutic properties of this oil are deodorant, vermifuge, digestive, stimulant, aperitif, emenagogue and anti-rheumatic.

Uses: Tarragon oil aids in soothing menstruation pains, abdominal pains, mental fatigue, nausea and vomiting. This essential oil promotes blood circulation in the body which helps in abundant supply of oxygen, nutrients, hormones and enzymes to all parts of the body. It also assists in the proper distribution of oxygen, hormones, nutrients and enzymes throughout the body. Tarragon oil helps in removing toxins that may tend to stay in the joints and limbs. This oil supports aging problems in women. It has the capacity to control knee pains and muscular pains in aged women.
